Influence on related reporting guidelines

Several related initiatives have followed a similar model to that of the CONSORT Statement, with the aim of improving the quality of reporting for other types of research. These initiatives include: PRISMA for systematic reviews of randomized trials; MOOSE for systematic reviews of observational studies; STARD for diagnostic accuracy studies; REMARK for tumor marker prognostic studies; TREND for non-randomized evaluations of behavioural and public health interventions; STROBE for observational studies.

Initiatives such as REMARK and STROBE have clearly benefited from the general awareness of a positive attitude to CONSORT. For example, it was possible to persuade five leading cancer journals to publish the REMARK guidelines simultaneously on the back of the success of CONSORT.

Concerns about the deficiencies of medical research publications have led to the creation of the EQUATOR Network (Enhancing the QUAlity and Transparency Of health Research). This new global initiative has the mission of improving the quality of health care by promoting the transparent and accurate reporting of health research. It will act as an 'umbrella' organization, bringing together developers of reporting guidelines, medical journals editors and peer reviewers, research funding bodies and other collaborators with mutual interest in proving the quality of research publications and of research itself.
