Herbal Medicinal Interventions
Given that herbal medicinal products are widely used, vary greatly in content and quality, and are actively tested in randomized controlled trials (RCTs), recommendations were developed to improve reporting RCTs of herbal medicine interventions.
Two journals, Explore and Annals of Internal Medicine, published these recommendations, which were developed through a consensus meeting with 16 participants in Toronto, Canada. Participants included a group of experts in clinical trail methodology, clinical trail reporting, pharmacognosy, herbal medicinal products, medical statistics and/or herbal product manufacturing.
The group agreed on context-specific elaborations of 9 CONSORT checklist items for RCTs of herbal medicines. It is hoped that this reporting guidance will help clinical trialists, editors, and peer reviewers and readers in reporting and critically appraising RCTs of herbal medicines.
